Initial Consonants

Early Phonics System from In-Print for Children

Share
This classroom-tested, systematic phonics activity helps children recognize 20 consonant sounds and their letter symbols. Each of the 6 labeled boxes contains a carefully selected group of consonants whose sounds are easy to distinguish from one another.
  • Use the picture cards alone to play sound games before matching the pictures with their letter.
  • Next, sort the picture cards according to their initial sound, repeating the names of each picture while emphasizing the initial sound.
  • Finally introduce the letter symbols that correspond to the sounds.
  • Children can then sort the picture cards under the appropriate letter card.

  • This oral repetition of each initial sound reinforces the child’s awareness of that sound in association with the written letter. Cards measure 2" x 2½" and are laminated cardstock. Ages 3½ - 6.
